Whether you log in dozens of miles every week or are just starting a Couch to 5K program, you have probably heard that yoga is good for runners. But who has the time for all that cross-training, right? Not so fast (not unless you’re running)! Our resident marathoner, Nari M., will help you discover how yoga can make you a better runner: improve your strength, flexibility, coordination, concentration, and balance.

Through a series of classes specifically tailored for runners, we will practice a sequence of postures designed to lengthen and stretch muscles used when running (hamstrings, IT band, hip flexors, tibial muscles, psoas muscles, achilles tendons, and the plantar fascia). We will work to alleviate spinal compression and build strength in the core to improve endurance and alignment during your runs. We will learn breathing techniques to help relax your body and make it more efficient.

Specifically scheduled for Mondays, in case you are hurting after your weekend long run, these weekly classes will help you reverse the imbalances created by your favorite sport. Each class in the series will have a specific focus and will build on the previous week’s practice, so as give you a complete set of tools you can use on your own to complement your runs at the end of the series. Areas of focus will include: hips, hamstrings, core, balance, and breathing… put it all together to allow you to “om to your PR.”

Nari Malkhasyan began her yoga journey 10 years ago when she first stepped on the mat seeking an escape from the stresses of her daily life. Instead, the practice made her feel more connected to life and to her true self. It gave her a new awareness and allowed her to appreciate the physical aspects of yoga as well as the mental ones. Nari received her RYT 200 training from Inner Power Yoga in Northern Virginia, and has had the good fortune to practice with teachers such as Schuyler Grant and Isauro Fernandez. Her teaching is inspired by her background in Iyengar and fueled by her natural desire to marry the body and mind with breath and movement. Nari teaches with compassion, making yoga practice accessible to students at all levels, while encouraging them to challenge their limits and discover their own possibilities. Outside of her yoga practice, Nari is a vegan, a traveler, and a runner with a few half- and one full-marathon under her belt. Now she has her sights set on ultra distances.
