10 Best Yoga BooksI’ve been asked by many people what the best yoga books are and kept promising to write a blog post with my recommendations. The thing is there aren’t universal best books on the subject of yoga; I’ve found that reading is so subjectively based on your own personal likes and dislikes and experiences in life. So remember this is my list based on my perspective and life experiences. Regardless I do think it’s a good place to start as half the battle is just starting (and knowing where to start) in the first place.

It worked out nicely that this list fit perfectly into the 2013 Wellness Challenge as well. Reading has always been one of my favorite ways to relax – and I am guilty of being the biggest fan of romance trash right alongside the classics, Harry Potter and sci-fi fantasy. My bookshelf is large and always growing as I devour more and more information on a daily basis regarding a variety of topics.

The escapism provided by reading totally envelopes me and transports me to a different time and place. In fact, I get so involved I’m sometimes afraid to start a book in the first place because I know nothing else will get done until the book is finished. Nonetheless, sometimes that escapism and change of perspective and scenery is just the thing you need to recover from a rough day.

So here it is, my top 10 list of yoga books for beginners (in no particular order)!

  1. Meditations from the Mat by Rolf Gates
  2. Path of the Urban Mystic by Darren Main
  3. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
  4. The Wisdom of Yoga by Stephen Cope
  5. The Yoga Sutras (translation and commentary by Georg Feuerstein)
  6. The Bhagavad Gita (translation and commentary by Swami Satchidinanda)
  7. Myths of the Asanas by Alanna Kaivalya
  8. Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana
  9. The Women’s Health Big Book of Yoga by Kathryn Budig
  10. Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

Bonus: Read your own journal now and again! Sometimes your own life provides more entertainment than you ever knew.

Try reading for just 15 minutes every night this week and see if you notice a change in mood, sleep or energy.
